Welcome to Year One
Spring 2 - The United Kingdom
Friday 4th April
The final week of the Spring term has been a very busy one in Year One!
In Maths we completed our measures unit with some activities that involved measuring volume and capacity.
In Science the children went for a walk around our school grounds to spot signs of Spring. They found a blossom tree as well as many flowering bulbs and some buds on our class tree next to the pond area.
We also had a Science day where the children investigated whether cars with bigger wheels travelled further. The children were able to back up their predictions with some great scientific thinking – well done!
It was our final gymnastics session with SCS this week and the children worked on finding different ways to travel along the apparatus as well as having an opportunity to perfect the different jumps they have been practising.
Finally, in RE this term the children have been learning about Shabbat and have enjoyed exploring some of the artefacts that Jewish people might use on Shabbat.
Friday 28th March
In Maths this week Y1 continued their learning about measures. They measured length and mass using non-standard units and at the end of the week practised using some of the language that we use to describe volume.
The children are coming to the end of the textiles DT unit for this term and are now becoming very confident with their sewing skills - fantastic running stitch this week in Magnolia class.
Finally this week the children completed an Agents Of Change activity – celebrate yourself. They created a poster about themselves, celebrating all the positive attributes they have.
Friday 21st March
In Maths this week, Y1 have begun to learn about measures. The focus was length, the children compared lengths using the vocabulary – shorter, taller and longer, then went on to measure objects in centimetres using rulers.
In English, the children innovated the recount text -Penguin’s Day Out, choosing their own animal and places to visit. It is great to see them becoming so much more independent with their writing.
In Science the children learnt the names of some different types of trees and how to recognise them using their seeds and leaves.
The children have also enjoyed consolidating their learning in the outside area with various tuff tray challenges.
Friday 14th March
This week the children began learning their new text in English – Penguin’s Day Out. This is a recount so the children have also been learning some of the features of this type of text writing – using the first person, writing in the past tense and using time adverbials to sequence their writing.
In maths we finished our unit about place value and numbers to 50 with some learning about finding one more and one less, ordering and comparing numbers.
This week in computing the children worked in groups to program their beebots to travel around a grid.
In Science this half term we are learning about plants, last week the children learned to name some of the common flowering plants you might find in our local area. This week the children were learning to name the different parts of a plant.
Finally this week we joined in with the Young Carers Day – Take a Break. The children came to school in funky socks and enjoyed designing their own.
Friday 7th March
This week Y1 have been busy with lots of exciting learning experiences both in and out of the classroom.
All the children have been able to go out and enjoy the sunshine and help Mrs Spademan get our school garden ready for the growing season ahead. They have been planting potatoes and seeds as well as other important garden jobs.
In Design and Technology this half term we are learning to do running stitch – the children have been learning to thread needles and tie knots, tricky skills that they have been determined to master.
The children have also been developing their programming skills in computing using Beebots – programmable toys. They really enjoyed working in groups to enter a series of instructions for the Beebots to follow.
SCS have been in once again this week to work with the children in PE, this week they developed the body shapes and balances from last week into jumps from the apparatus.
Friday 28th February
Our first week back after half term has been a very busy one with lots of learning taking place.
In English we have been innovating our Talk 4 Writing story, Lost and Found. Instead of the South Pole setting the children have set their story in the rainforest.
In Maths we have started to learn about numbers to 50.
In PE this term SCS coaching are going to be leading the sessions. This week the children made different shapes with their body and developed their balancing skills.
We have also begun to learn about the Jewish creation story in RE, money in PSHE and the names of the countries that make up the UK in geography.
The children have enjoyed some gardening sessions with Mrs Spademan, doing some weeding in preparation for planning some seeds next week.
